We now have an official response from both Ivan Demidov and the Montreal Canadiens following SKA St. Petersburg’s surprising attempt to bring him back to the KHL.
In the last few hours, newly appointed SKA head coach Igor Larionov openly expressed his desire to have Demidov return to Russia for one final season in the KHL before heading to the NHL in 2026–27.
Demidov Turns Down SKA — Canadiens Stand Firm
Well, that didn’t take long.
According to The RG Media and Marco D’Amico, both Ivan Demidov’s camp and the Montreal Canadiens have no interest whatsoever in loaning the top prospect back to the KHL. Despite Larionov’s ties to Canadiens executive Martin Lapointe, the answer is clear: not happening.
“According to sources speaking to RG Media, neither the player nor the Canadiens are considering such an option.”

“Despite Larionov’s connection to Martin Lapointe, no dice for the new SKA bench boss.”
— Marco D’Amico
All Eyes on Montreal
The message is loud and clear: Demidov will be in Montreal next season. Not only is he expected to join the Canadiens immediately, but he’s already being touted as a frontrunner for the 2025–26 Calder Trophy, awarded to the NHL’s top rookie.
Now that his future seems firmly planted in North America, the next big question is:
