Montreal Canadiens goaltender Cayden Primeau has become the center of speculation following his refusal to comment on his future with the organization during the team’s end-of-season press conference.

When asked about the possibility of signing a new contract with the Habs, Primeau declined to answer. While he didn’t express a desire to immediately part ways with the team that drafted him 199th overall in 2017, he also gave no indication of wanting to stay. His silence has only fueled speculation about an impending split.

Sports journalist Anthony Marcotte weighed in, saying:

“Cayden Primeau refused to commit to his future because the Canadiens still hold his rights. He is eligible for arbitration this summer. He declined to open the door to a change of scenery. I think both sides are ready for an amicable split.”

Adding to the uncertainty, it was 19-year-old Jacob Fowler—not Primeau—who got the nod in the final playoff game for the Laval Rocket, the Canadiens’ AHL affiliate.

At 25 years old, the 6-foot-3, 205-pound netminder has had a rollercoaster season. He struggled in the NHL with a 4.70 goals-against average and a .836 save percentage. But in the AHL, Primeau was outstanding, finishing with a 1.96 GAA, a .927 save percentage, and a stellar record of 21–2–2.

There’s no denying his potential—but his place in the Canadiens’ plans is very much in question.

There’s also a human element here. After years of commitment to the organization, this uncertainty can’t be easy. Whether it’s the end or just a new chapter, one hopes Primeau gets another chance to prove himself as a legitimate NHL goaltender.
